Explanation: What is Abalone Mother of pearl?
The so-called Abalone Mother of pearl consists of a regular arrangement of approximately 400 Nm thick panels made of aragonite single crystal (a crystalline form of the calcium carbonate). The panels are stacked on top of one another in the form of growth cones, which grow together again at their bases. Between the panels is one approx. 30 Nm thick organic layer. Although the organic layer has only approx. 1-5% of the total weight, it is crucial for the material properties of the Mother of pearl, because Abalone Perlmutt is 3000 times break-tough as pure aragonite!
